❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How many views do I need to get 4,000 watch hours?+
It depends on your video length and average view duration. For a 10-minute video with 40% average view duration (4 minutes watched), you need approximately 60,000 views. Use the calculator above to get an exact number based on your specific video length and retention rate.
What are the YouTube monetization requirements?+
To join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) and enable monetization, you need: 1,000 subscribers AND 4,000 watch hours in the past 12 months. YouTube Shorts creators can alternatively qualify with 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views in 90 days.
Do watch hours reset after 12 months?+
YouTube counts watch hours from the past rolling 365 days. Old watch hours naturally drop off as they go past the 12-month window. Once you are approved for monetization, your channel stays monetized as long as it stays in good standing — you do not need to maintain 4,000 hours continuously after approval.
Do YouTube Shorts count toward watch hours?+
No. YouTube Shorts views do not count toward the 4,000 watch hour requirement for the standard YouTube Partner Program. Shorts have a separate qualification path based on views rather than watch time.
How can I increase my watch hours faster?+
To accumulate watch hours faster: create longer videos (15–30 min), improve your retention rate with strong intros, upload consistently, use playlists to chain videos together, and promote your videos on social media. Even a small improvement in average view duration significantly reduces the views needed.
